Well, i got an offer from my friend, that wants to sell his 1995 Citroen GS. The very last of the breed.

Kinja'd!!!

You might think "Isn't the GS has been discontinued since 1980's?"

Kinja'd!!!

Well, in Indonesia, the GS is discotinued in 1995, when the factory that made the car for Indonesian Market Only, Alun Indah Corporation, has gone bust. He asking 1200 bucks for it, which is precisely the same as the running example of one of these worth in here.

That is so many kinds of fascinating, and would make a really cool project car (especially at that price — it looks to be in really straight condition, especially for the age), but being an American who knows less than nothing about Citroens, I would opt for something more mainstream as a DD.

YES! I have no idea if it'll work or continue to work after you purchase it but it's a Citroen. So you have to.

If you're on this site, asking that question, you already know the correct answer. So go do it already!

Or, if you need more persuasion:

You can't consider yourself a true car guy until you've owned an old Citroen, and old Alfa, and an old Mopar*. This gets you 1 out of 3. Actually, because of the "Citroen made in Indonesia WTF" factor it may even get you a pass on one of the other two.

A GS is just about the perfect gateway drug Citroen. Old enough to be proper, but without the commitment to hipsterism that comes with a DS, the total impracticality of a 2CV, or the wallet-draining capabilities of an SM. A CX is the other viable option, but that's not on the menu here.

There are still zillions of these rattling round France, so bits are still available and relatively cheap - you'll just have to get used to paying more for the freight than the part, and not getting it tomorrow.

$1200 isn't a big gamble in the great scheme of "dumb automotive things I could spend money on"

Only downsides:

You will get to know and love public transport or your second vehicle, as you'll spend a lot of time waiting for an old guy named Claude to finish his Gitane before considering whether to root around in his barn for the part you need, then more time waiting for the three hours a month when French Post Office hours coincide with Claude's occasional visits to town for an aperitif, then even more time waiting for union rules to allow the postal workers to actually process your package.

You'll have to get used to the Citroen way of doing things, both for maintenance and driving. Both of which will drive you nuts initially.

It's likely to permanently ruin you for other cars, as you will eventually realise that the Citroen way of doing things is more often than not actually the right way, and the rest of the world just hasn't realized that!

*this is an ancient rule I just made up. But you've gotta admit it's valid.

Well, i think i'll do it and set the kia to my parent's house.
Altough i have to check the car first. If it runs, i'll buy it, if it isn't, i'll finish the project on my Mazda Cosmo.
